Gloucester, Massachusetts

Gloucester, MA - Originally settled in 1623, the area was soon abandoned due to poor growing conditions. Eventually the area was re-settled and by 1642 it was formally incorporated at the Town of Gloucester. It takes its name from the city in England.

Early settlement initially occured in the interior, but as the fishing industry expanded the town grew towards the harbor area.

The currents absolutely rip through there when the tide is coming in or out. I don't recommend kayaking unless you time it so the current works with you well. Also, if you get caught in the cut with boat traffic, it can be a nightmare.

Happens every St Peters festival. It's always a good time to go down and watch, or even to just go to the other festivities. Recommend it.
